From 25th to 16th – A Night of Quick Thinking, Foil Towers & Fish and Chips

Last night we took part in a fantastic charity quiz night organised by JMW, raising money for the Spinal Injury Association (SIA). It was hosted by the one and only Jonny Spangles – and as you can imagine, it was anything but your average quiz night.

High-Tech & High Stakes

This wasn’t a paper-and-pen situation. The quiz was delivered via an iPad eQuiz system, which was brilliant. Not only did it keep things slick and interactive, but it also meant no cheating – once your answer was in, that was it.

Teams were scored not just on getting the right answer, but on how quickly they reacted. There was a twist though – if you answered incorrectly, you were knocked down the leaderboard. Speed was important… but accuracy was everything. It definitely kept us on our toes.

A Rocky Start…

We kicked off the first half sitting at 25th out of 28 teams. Not our strongest moment.

Competing under the unforgettable team name “RFI’ve No Idea” (we weren’t alone in the questionable naming department – most companies took the opportunity to poke fun at themselves), we knew there was work to do.

The rounds covered everything:

  • General knowledge
  • Sports
  • Music
  • A picture round
  • A physical challenge

Slowly but surely, we clawed our way up the leaderboard.

The Foil Landmark Challenge

One of the standout moments of the night was the physical challenge. Armed with foil, we had to build a famous landmark – and it had to be free-standing.

We began ambitiously with the Tower of Pisa… which somehow evolved into the BT Tower. Creative reinterpretation? We’ll let you decide.

Other teams got inventive too. One group wrapped a candlestick in foil and boldly declared it The Shard. Points for confidence perhaps, though the “free-standing” brief may have been stretched slightly!

Fish & Chips, Raffles & a Strong Finish

Halfway through, we were treated to a fish and chip supper – always a winning move at any event.

And then came the raffle. A big congratulations to Ian from our team, who won a meal for two at 20 Stories – definitely a highlight of the evening.

By the end of the night, we’d fought our way up to 16th place. Not quite podium-worthy, but a respectable comeback from 25th – and more importantly, all in support of an incredible cause.

Supporting the Spinal Injury Association

Most importantly, the event raised funds for the Spinal Injury Association (SIA), whose work supporting people affected by spinal cord injuries is invaluable. It was great to see so many teams come together for such an important cause while enjoying a bit of healthy competition along the way.

Huge thanks to JMW for organising such a well-run and entertaining evening, and to Jonny Spangles for keeping the energy high throughout.

We may not have taken home the trophy… but “RFI’ve No Idea” definitely gave it our best shot.
